I'm really excited to tell you about our Shop Hop!!

I'm lucky enough to have some really lovely local sewing shop friends. Judy from Sew Patchwork in Thame and Sally from Sally's Sewing Box in Princes Risborough have always been super nice supportive friends. On a summer evening in a local pub we dreamt up the plan to run a Shop Hop for our customers.

We'll also have lots of lovely special offers and goodies on offer for those two days.....

Call up your friends, plan a little jaunt, have some nice lunch in one of our pretty villages on the way - make a day of it! We'd all love to welcome you to our shops.

Treat yourself . Indulge in a day out before the demands of December!

A Busy Week In Pictures

Cross Stitch Christmas Fabric - love that!

New Xmas bundle in store inspired by my Christmas Patchwork Quilt colourway

The weeks are whizzing by in a warm blur of fabricy, sewingy loveliness at the moment.  This week was such a fun week. We started with our Simple Sampler Reunion and ended it with a complete fabric move around, caused by the creative buzz of some new ( shh ...Christmas) fabric and the urge to create a 'autumn' fabric display for anyone else feeling that nights-drawing-in fabric fug?

New rayon and voiles for dressmaking, scarves and more!

Reunion!

Lots of new things to tell you about........we've just ordered an exciting range of Cotton + Steel fabrics which I'm super excited about receiving - not least because I love a bit of collaborative sisterhood in the craft world and these ladies are leading from the front. Oooh - and also their fabric is fabulous! You know I can't resist a pony print ( ooh and there are also cats of course, no dogs or chickens mind you!)
Cotton +Steel Mustang - ponies and gold! fab x

We have Christmas gift vouchers arriving next week so if you're organised enough to be dropping hints about Santa's delivery already and you fancy some guilt free fabric stashing next year ( so much lovely new fabric arriving in Jan you know!)) then add us to your list.
New Mini Bunting joy!

Next week the lovely Jenny will be in residence at Therapy Thursday from 10am - 2pm ( we are all booked up from midday onwards but there are some spaces in the morning) so if you have a quilt nearing completion that you'd like to whisk off to the quilting fairy to finish then book a slot asap. Your quilt doesn't need to be finished - you can book it in in advance and then drop it off later when it's ready to be quilted. Nothing is nicer than picking up a finished quilt from Jenny! It's my definition of luxury!

Table runners and place mats classes  - spaces

Retro Pinny Class - 2 spaces

Hot water bottle coveres

If you'd like to take a Christmas Class in Nov/Dec do book now as spaces are filling up quickly now the weather has turned chilly. Lots of classes are over subscribed already so we will be offering some additional dates in the evening for those of you who can't make the daytime classes.

Infinity Scarf Class - extra date 28th Oct 8pm

We will be running the sold out in a blink of an eye Scarf class in the evening additionally on 28th Oct 8pm at St Anne's in a corner of the Bee so drop me an e mail for more details if you'd like to join that class. We will also be offering the equally over subscribed Christmas Wreath class at the Nov Bee on 18th Nov 8pm, again book in advance.

Christmas Felt Wreath - Nov 18th 8pm. Extra date.

We'll be at Buckland Village Hall next Saturday 18th Dec for our Retreat Day ( sorry sold out and then some, but Feb dates to come soon) so the shop will be closed.

Anyway, I've got the log burner blazing and a glass of wine and two long borders of EPP edging to appliqué so I'm going to leave you with some more pictures of The PlainStitch week.....enjoy it as much as we have!

The Simple Sampler Reunion

We had such a fun party yesterday. More than 50 women and at least that many quilts again, all squashed into our local village hall to share our quilts and talk sewing and meet old friends and make new ones at our Simple Sampler Reunion.

The story of the Simple Sampler........

Once upon a time a long time ago I tried to make a quilt. I spent several years trying to make a quilt. It took that long to learn how to make a proper one, from books, self taught ( no internet!). When I finished it was small and brown. I was discouraged. I lived in a new town with young babies and I was the only real life quilter I knew.

Then came the internet - suddenly there were other quilters, like me, who liked what I liked...but they almost all lived in America or Australia. I was a less lonely quilter but I still just had cyber sewing friends. Cyber sewing friends are (lovely, but) not a substitute for actual real life sewing friends. Really. They're just not.

One day I confessed to another real life person that I knew that after my babies were in bed, at night and at nap times, I made quilts. They said they'd love to learn how to make one (thank you Netty and Rachel W) - then another and another of my real life friends wanted to make a quilt (Jane, and Chris and Ines and Claire and Pat and RachelB and Annie and Christina, Hels and Sarie and Harriet and Nikki DB, Becky, Cat and Lynne). We started a group called The MakeClub and we met in my front room for 5 years. I taught all my real life friends (and their mums, and  neighbours!) to make quilts - some of us had some more babies, we made them all baby quilts,  yay I had turned my friends into sewing friends!

The quilt that I designed to show my friends how to quilt was called the Simple Sampler. It wasn't all that simple, in fact it was pretty comprehensive for a beginner, but I had to be called that so I didn't frighten them off! They all made a Simple Sampler ( or 3, Jane?). They showed off their newly made quilts and other people wanted to learn, too. Would I teach them too please?

Shyly I offered to teach a real class, for paying people. I agonised about it. A lot. But when my last baby started at play school 2 mornings a week I did it. I called my little venture PlainStitch. My motto was (and still is!) Modern Simple Sewing. No bossy rules, no fiddly nonsense. Lovely clean modern quilts at are of today but made in lovely old fashioned ways.

Simple Sampler was the class I always wished I could find when I started to learn. Lovely people started calling and e mailing asking to come to my class.(Thank you Jane D - you were my first e mail and yesterday your latest quilt was so beautiful it made me cry!)

Today I got to spend the morning with so, so many of them! From those first classes  to now I have shared such a special time with these wonderful ladies. Each quilt and it's maker have a special place in my memory. I remember every block!

Yesterday we all came together and shared those special first quilts - then wowed with the quilts they're making now. It was a complete overload for the senses. People packed into the hall, so much laughter and some tears, cake and tea, warmth, so much warmth and kindness and support. It was a special day.

Simple Sampler has come a long way. More than 50 people have made a first quilt at this class and this class is always busy long before the start date. It remains my favourite class to teach even though we teach so many more at PlainStitch now. It's the magical first step, opening peoples eyes to creativity, colour and such a nurturing hobby.

I do have a LOT of sewing friends now! Real life sewing friends. Such lovely friends. Thank you Simple Sampler. Thank you all. From little brown quilts great oaks, choc full of colourful quilts, grow x

ps Send me your pics of the event and i'll add them to the post! x

Autumn Skies and Flying Geese

The weather has turned decidedly chilly, we've lit the fire, the garden is starting to look bare and leafy and there was a frost early this morning when I walked out to the field with the dogs. This weekend I have made a start on my Flying Geese Quilt. It feels right in this weather. Birds starting to flock in the trees and my pile of flying geese slowly slowly growing. I've been working on my Arendelle Quilt for a few months, slow hand pieced appliqué - so I'm ready for a change. You do need to be in the mood for this kind of block construction, the repetitive nature of it is quite soothing in the right frame of mind; press, fold, measure, cut, draw, sew, cut, sew and press again. I've been battling ( and succumbing to!) a nasty cold all week and in the rain of Saturday this was just the tonic I needed for feeble recuperation! You can't beat the appeal of a new project, piles of fabric all freshly cut and ready to be pieced. I feel better already. Plus I have a new favourite tool ( thank you Netty!). I've ordered some in for the shop this week - love them! They draw a teeny little super thin accurate line of chalk using a rotating wheel. Sounds clunky but in reality is a dream to use. I've been using it for drawing my sewing line of my flying geese units but it will also be great for dressmakers, marking quilt tops, hems - so many applications. My new favourite toy in blue, pink or white this week at The Workroom!

I'm planning to work on this project at the Retreat Day on the 18th Oct. I'm so looking forward to an uninterrupted day of sewing - what a treat. I should mention we have 2 spaces opened up due to various family/health type issues so if you'd like to join us drop me an e mail, it's at Buckland Hall and is from 10am - 7pm all catered so just bring your sewing and relax and be spoilt!

Waking to frosty mornings and glinting cobwebs reminds me I should also say after a coupleof changes we have a couple of spaces for Halloween Hairbands for Miss Stitchers next Sat 11th at 10.30am if you want to get ahead on your Halloween costuming - we also have lots of lovely Halloween fabrics if you're doing a diy costume or just fancy running up a bit of Halloween inspired decoration - I love this cushion by Amy at Diary of a Quilter - follow this link for her great tutorial of how to make it - I really want to make one, I love the idea of seasonal cushions to change to!

If you're a Miss Stitcher do start to think about which classes you'd like to take going forward if you haven't already, Nov, Dec and Jan are looking very busy already.

We're adding to our repertoire of haberdashery at The Workroom as we roll out our dressmaking classes. This Friday our Dressmaking for Girls Beginners Class kicked off with much exciting fabric comparing and pattern manipulation. We've added Gutermann Sew All to our thread selection - its' the thread of choice for dressmakers due to the huge range of colours.

Our Machine Embroiderers this week were also playing with different Gutermann colours to great effect - loving chocolate browns and aubergines for this. If you'd like to take our dessmaking or machine embroidery classes in Jan do check out the details on the new classes page for 2015 as both classes are filling up at a rate of knots .

Last of all we have been busy working on our bundle selection this week. Helen and Claire have been busy working their colour magic to make lots of enticing colour combinations. As ever our 5 FQ bundles retail at £15 which makes them really great value too if you're building your stash or looking for a pressie for a friend.

Phew - so much happens in a week at The Workroom! This week it all happens again - we have our Simple Sampler Reunion on Tuesday at St Anne's from 9.30am, then new Get To Know Your Sewing Machine students, Patchwork Cushions kicking off and another class in progress, our Autumn English Paper Piecing class comes together again so we'll see first progress on those projects - can't wait for that! Then round out the week with Halloween Hairbands and our fab little girl sewers. It's another jam packed creative week of sewing! Perfect! Ward off the Autumn blues and come and sew with us too x

Free Motion Machine Embroidery

It was the second part of Claire's mind blowing Free Motion Embroidery Class this week. The work and ideas and images coming out of this class have been amazing - these ladies have taken the theory of this sewing method then come up with designs so fabulously personal and quirky and gorgeous that Claire and I keep pinching each other!

This is such a special class -lots of technical knowledge; right brain stuff - but it allows you to unleash so much right brain creativity....what's not to like?

Claire is such a great teacher ( she actually is a primary school teacher), there was such an amazing energy in the class. Her inspiration boards are works of art in their own right, but rather than daunt her students she completely inspires them. In their turn the ladies who took this class rolled up their sleeves and jumped right in. They took their sewing machines and asked them to do all manner of odd things in the name or art. But do it they did and they just flew! Look what they made!

If you'd like to give it a try we have another class scheduled for Jan 15th and 29th so do sign up early.
